The Mental Health Carers Voice Program works with carers to create a better mental health system nationally and in the ACT.
Our vision is a Canberra that recognises, values and includes mental health carers.
Our 2020-2023 priorities are:
- Timely, Effective and Integrated Services
Reduce the complexity of services for carers and the people they care for. Caring is made more complex because services for both carers and the people the care for are not meeting their needs by being timely, effective and integrated.
- Health and Wellbeing
Improve the holistic health and wellbeing of mental health carers. Stigma and cultural expectations can make it difficult to disclose being a mental health carer and ask for support for their physical and emotional needs.
- Workplace and Education
All mental health carers should be able to participate fully in work and education. Caring makes it difficult for mental health carers to participate in the workforce or education due to limited time, stigma or discrimination.
- Recognition, Inclusion and Value Outside of Caring
The value and contribution of mental health carers should be recognised in the community. Caring can be all-consuming and overtime and carers can lose a sense of identity and purpose outside the caring role.
